DOES DEMOCRACY WORK?
U3A Melbourne City has developed this blog-based course to run over the final three terms of 2012. The traditional classroom-based discussion has been replaced by a virtual forum and the limitless resources of the Internet. This course is also an opportunity to participants to sharpen their Internet skills. Participants can work at their own pace as they view, comment on, and/or respond to other participants' comments on, the issues raised.
Convenor Jack Foks says that, this year, the course is open to members of any U3A without the need to become an associate of U3A Melbourne City.
Participants need access to, and some familiarity with, a computer with Internet access. You can enrol anytime until 2 November by sending an e-mail to the tutor, Jack Foks, on jack.foks@bigpond.com, providing the name of your U3A and your membership number.

THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF SENIOR AUSTRALIANS (EPSA)

The government's response to the EPSA report includes $4.8m to promote lifelong learning by expanding education opportunities by adult and community education providers and community organisations to older Australians.
To ensure that older Australians remain central to the government's policy development, an expanded advisory Panel on Positive Ageing will be established on an ongoing basis. It will play a key role in helping to drive the government's ageing agenda.

PROGRAM GROWTH SUPPORT FUND
After allocation of Program Growth Support grants in February, Network surveyed Member U3As who did not apply, to find out why additional funds were not sought. Thirty-eight member U3As were surveyed and 25 responded. Among the respondents were two U3As who thought they had submitted an application, but these applications had never been received at the Network Office. Other U3As felt they had never been notified of the funding round.
Also, in the survey, ten U3As indicated they had sufficient funds for their plans, and five said they had too great a workload or no time to develop and administer a project.
A restricted funding round will be held in April-May to process applications from those U3As who had wanted to participate in the October-February funding round. Then, the remaining small amount of PGS unallocated money will be applied for by a coalition of five U3As working with Network on the Executive's U3A Development Program, to promote education and branding activities for all U3As. An example of this work is the sash banners with the new U3A logos being provided to all U3As.

CAPITATION FEES AND DATA FORMS
Invoices are being sent now to all Member U3As for their 2012 capitation fees. Returns are due back to the Network Office by 31 May. There has been no increase in the capitation fee this year. Data forms to record contact details, office bearers, etc., are also being sent out now.

SENIORS FESTIVAL PUBLICITY
Seniors Festival has often been known by other names – Carnival of Learning and Seniors Week are two. The current name Seniors Festival encompasses the range of activities for seniors in October. The Seniors Festival Events Program will be published in September, and Network wants our ads and information to include more information on non-metropolitan U3A activity.

Network will be surveying Member U3As in June-July to gather information for our advertising in the Events Program
